Kerala, one of the most idyllic states of India, lies to the extreme southwest of Indian peninsula. It is flanked by the Arabian Sea on the west and the mountain ranges of the Western Ghats on the east. The state can be divided into hills, valleys, midland plains and coastal belts. Formed in the year 1956, it has 14 districts with Thiruvananthapuram as its capital.
The economy of Kerala is primarily agrarian in nature. Some of the key crops of Kerala are tea, coffee, rubber, cashew, cardamom, pepper and cinnamon. Its service sector is booming with financial companies, real estate agencies, mortgage companies, consultancy services, insurance companies and tourism industry. Kerala is quite advanced in terms of Human Development Index and life standard. It records the highest among states, on the United Nations Development Programme's Human Development Index. In Kerala, the number of people living below the poverty line is around 25 percent, which is less than the national average of 35 per cent. Kerala has become one of the most sought after tourist destinations in the country as well as abroad
